NWA’s 1st orphanage center winner is Daughters of Mary Mother of Mercy (DMMM) Congregation, also known as “Mercy Sisters”. DMMM is a religious owned orphanage center founded in 1961 by late Bishop Anthony Gogo Nwedo, C.S.Sp. DMMM or Mercy Sisters is now under the care of Rev. Sister Anita Ogbonna, who is the center coordinator. DMMM is located in Ahiaeke Ndume in Umuahia North LGA of Abia State, Nigeria. DMMM carters for children from age infant to 18 yrs old, providing them with food, clothing, shelter and other basic necessities. The center also assists with payment of tuition for these children. The money donated to DMMM by Nigerian Women Association in Colorado (NWA) will go towards providing financial assistance in providing necessary care to the children at the center.
The 1st $500 Widow winner- Elizabeth Arinze is a 30yrs old apprentice and widow with 3 children, ages 2yrs to 4yrs. She is from Eziagu town in Enugu state, Nigeria. She lost her husband in August 2014 and is left alone to carter for her three little children on little to no income.
The 2nd $500 widow winner- Angela Uwakwe is a 45yrs old farmer and widow with 3 children ages, 8yrs to 12yrs. Angela is from Orji town in Imo state, Nigeria. She lost her husband in 2014 and is left alone to fetch for her three young children with no other source of income.
The 3rd $500 widow winner- Chinwe Alozie is a 38yrs old housewife and widow with 3 children, ages 13 years to 20 years. Chinwe is from Ozara-Oru LGA in Imo state, Nigeria. She lost her husband in 2011 and she is left to fetch and carter for her children alone. Her husband’s family kicked her and her three children out of the family compound briefly after the husband’s demise and she is left with no choice but to return to her paternal family with her children.
NWA’s 4th $500 widow winner- Nkeiruka Ugo is a 40yrs old peti trader and widow with four children, ages 7yrs to 17yrs. Nkeiruka is from Umuonokwu Okwuato Abombaise LGA in Imo state, Nigeria. She lost her husband in 2014 and since has been catering for her four young children alone from the small income she makes from selling peti provisions.
NWA’s 5th $500 widow winner- Mary Onye is a 34 years old laborer and widow with four children, ages 6 years to 10 years. Mary is from Amaimo LGA in Imo state, Nigeria. She lost her husband in 2010 after she had just put to bed. Since her husband’s demise, she continues to struggle with poor health condition doing laboring jobs to carter for her young children.
NWA’s 6th $500 widow winner- Okwuchi Onuiri is a 37 years old widow with five children, ages 2 years to 10 years. Okwuchi is from Umuabiakwa, Obingwa LGA in Abia State, Nigeria. She supports her children as a hired hand for odd jobs. She lost her husband in 2015 to diabetes leaving her to carter for her five young children alone.
NWA’s 7th $500 widow winner- Ifeoma Chukwuemeka is a 37 years old widow with five children, ages 5 years to 16 years. Ifeoma is from Ikeduru LGA in Imo State, Nigeria. She lost her husband in 2013 in Onitsha. After her husband’s demise, she moved to Ikeduru with her children and started moin moin business in order to support her children.
NWA’s 8th $500 widow winner- Ijeoma Nwanaju is a 45yrs old office assistance worker and widow with two children ages 7yrs to 18yrs. Ijeoma is from Umunohu Nsu, Ehime Mbano LGA in Imo State, Nigeria. She lost her husband in 2013 to a heart attack. She is left to carter for her two children of whom one is a child with special needs resulting from a brain injury from a car accident.
